Almost every UK construction site requires a valid CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) card before you’re allowed on site — but the right card depends on your role and qualification level.
The main card categories
Labourer / Green card — for those without a construction-related qualification, valid after passing the CITB Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) test.
Skilled Worker / Blue card — requires an NVQ/SVQ Level 2 (or equivalent) in your trade.
Advanced Craft / Gold card — NVQ/SVQ Level 3.
Manager / Black card — for supervisors and managers, typically requiring a relevant qualification such as SMSTS alongside NVQ Level 4+.
Getting started
Every card (except the very top tiers) starts with the CITB HS&E test — a multiple-choice knowledge test on-site safety basics, bookable online, and valid for two years while you complete the rest of your card application.
How long it takes
A Labourer card can often be issued within a couple of weeks of passing the test. Trade cards that require an NVQ take longer, since you’ll need portfolio evidence or an on-site assessment — plan a few months ahead if you’re starting from scratch.
Renewal
Most cards are valid for 3–5 years. Renewing usually requires proof you’re still working in the industry and, for some cards, an updated health & safety test — don’t leave it to the last minute, since a site will turn you away with an expired card regardless of experience.
